Finally home
The hospital was only a 15-minute walk from my apartment - but I still preferred to let my girlfriend pick me up. In the car I first found out that a broken jaw and a wiggling car are not good friends. On the way I redeemed my prescriptions for the Retterspitz
and a pack of pain relievers and went home. Once there, I first hugged my girlfriend and lay down in the bathtub. When the hot water slowly poured over my body, I actually almost had to hold back tears - I realized what a torture it actually
was for me and how happy I was to finally be at home in my own four walls. Respects to all the people who have been in hospital for much longer with much worse problems than mine!
After a long bath and fresh clothes, I was like a new person and in a much better mood. Appropriately, it was also lunchtime and I was curious to see what it would be like to make and eat the liquid food I had chosen in advance. In the first time I tried the Runtime Meal - if you want to test it too, I recommend this one* to order as it has no taste. You can vary it with pureed fruits or other flavors. Alternatively, there is currently a mix with many flavors.* At first I only had the taste strawberry - the constant taste every day unfortunately gets boring very quickly. All in all, I found it tasted very good and was satisfied for the time being. Above all, for me this food was much easier to get into my mouth with a straw.

After the meal it was time to swap cooling and Retterspitz wraps and get on the couch. I wanted to tell my girlfriend so much. In the beginning, talking is also possible, but terribly exhausting - that's why I often preferred to just not say all too much.
Apart from that, you automatically tend to rest a lot.
The first days
After the first two days at home, the normal work week started again in which I was then alone during the day. After just a few days, I didn't feel like having the runtime meal all day anymore and so I needed something new. I then tried Huel and
Mana (both no longer available on Amazon) to get a change. While I found Huel quite terrible, Mana was very good. Nonetheless, I couldn't "eat" mana 3 times a day. I was slowly becoming
more creative. In the morning I started to prefer to throw different types of cornflakes into the mixer - a dream compared to days of powdered meals, I can tell you that. 😁 Lunch mostly dependen on either Mana or now the Runtime Meal.
If that had already existed back then, I would also have been happy about YFood * , since we "eat" that sometimes even now! You can order some here* if you wanna give it a shot.
In the evenings however, I usually didn't feel like pre-made liquid food any more. It is important to get creative here! Fortunately, I'm quite passable in the kitchen, so I tried my hand at various soups at the beginning. Important hint: Make a huge
pot of it right away! With such a pot here* you only do the work once in a while. I was always happy when I saw that there was still fresh soup left in the evening.
In addition to potato and pumpkin soup, I used various cookbooks - if you don't have anything at home you can try it here* and browse if you find something nice. In the case of soups
with contents, I simply put them through the mixer again after they had been cooked.
Apart from eating, the schedule looks very relaxing during the sick leave. You have to visit the surgeon regularly to check the healing process. Otherwise there is not much to do, as you are also not allowed to exert yourself. You should go for a walk
regularly - but no more, as this is too strenuous and gets too much blood pumping in your veins. Unfortunately, sleeping while sitting is still the way to go. If you're the kinda guy who doesn't know what to do, you might make a plan for
that before the operation is done. As a computer nerd, I'm the type of guy who can spend a lot of time in front of electronic devices. If you are not, you should perhaps look for a hobby now 😂 In my daily routine, my greatest friend was
my Playstation4* (right now more of a PS5*) and my television. If you don't have it yet, you should definitely
get that Amazon Prime* account. In addition, I built myself a new PC and tried to master my new guitar better.
What about the swelling?
Within the first few weeks it was easy to see how the swelling was getting better. In this gallery you can see how my face improved day by day:
I can only say over and over again: Cool it down and use something like Retterspitz, that's all it needs. So the weeks passed by really quickly I have to admit. You get used to this way of eating and not speaking so much. You can tell every week how the swelling and the jaw are getting better and better. After the 6 weeks you can eat solid food again for the first time - but I didn't care. After a little over 5 weeks I just couldn't take it anymore and got myself somelight vegetarian thai food. I couldn't chew it so I just swallowed it whole as it was - this was probably the best meal I've ever had. 😂
Looking back, I also noticed that the really bad thing about liquid food is the fact that it just feels like it slips through the stomach. You quickly get tired of eating, but somehow you are never really fed up. I just realized this when I started eating
solid foods for the first time in well over a month. During this entire time I also lost over 10 kilos - at least something positive. 😋 BUT: If you are already pretty thin, you should really gain a few kilos beforehand! The 6 weeks were
over as quickly as they came. Everything went smoothly and I went back to work.
That was it!
Well that was the most notable time before and 6 weeks after the operation. At the time of this blog, the operation was 2 years ago. I will regularly try to post updates on this page as it has evolved from time to time. So far, thank you very much for
reading!
